Origin: The Encounter of Street Markets and the Spring Breeze of Art

Furong Ancient Town

The origin of the nickname – the auspicious homonym of "Tian Zifang"
The name "Tianzifang" is not its historical name, but rather a contemporary artistic anecdote. The area was originally called "Zhichengfang." In 2001, renowned painter Huang Yongyu named this burgeoning neighborhood. He cleverly borrowed the name of the oldest Chinese painter recorded in the *Records of the Grand Historian*—"Tian Zifang"—and named it "Tianzifang" using its homophony. This name not only signifies that the area will become a gathering place for artists but also infuses this ancient alleyway with a profound cultural expectation.

The Road to Transformation: From Factory to Creative Paradise
The modern rebirth of Tianzifang is an epic of spontaneous urban renewal:
- The essence of everyday life (before the 1990s): The neighborhood was a mix of Shikumen lane houses and alleyway factories. Taikang Road was once a bustling street market full of life, dotted with small workshops and factories.
- The Emergence of Art (1998-1999): The turning point began with the arrival of the renowned Chinese-American painter Chen Yifei, who set up his studio in an old factory building. Like the first breath of spring, it attracted a large number of artists and craft shops to follow.
- Naming and Prosperity (2000s): After Huang Yongyu named it, Tianzifang rose to fame as Shanghai's first creative industry cluster formed spontaneously based on an old street, attracting creative enterprises from 18 countries and regions and being hailed as a "new cultural landmark of Shanghai".
- Symbiosis and Reflection (present): With the booming development of commerce, how to maintain its original artistic creativity and local life atmosphere in the face of throngs of tourists and numerous small shops has become a new challenge for Tianzifang, and it is also driving it to constantly renew itself.

Must-see scenes: the trio of architecture, art and life

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The charm of Tianzifang does not lie in the grand single landscape, but in the pervasive interweaving and collision of architectural texture, artistic atmosphere and daily life.

Architectural texture - the spatial poetics of Shikumen alleys
Walking through Tianzifang is an immersive architectural experience in itself.

- A labyrinthine network of alleys: This is one of the well-preserved Shikumen complexes in Shanghai. The crisscrossing lanes that are only a few feet wide are the skeleton of Tianzifang. On both sides are clear water brick walls, European-style window lattices and mottled walls full of creepers, and above the head are clothes that are still drying, instantly pulling people from modern Shanghai into the world of fireworks decades ago.
- The "Painter's Building" of Old and New Dialogue: Building 5, located in Lane 210 of Taikang Road, is the epitome and landmark of Tianzifang. It was founded in 1935, from the "Kangfu Weaving Factory" to the "Shanghai Watch and Clock Accessories Factory", and then to Chen Yifei and other artists to give it the soul of the "Painter's Building". Today, it is undergoing a protective transformation, and in the future, it will appear as a huge "art exhibition frame", making the old wall the background of new artworks and a symbol of Tianzifang's "re-take-off".
- Time code on the ground: Pay attention to your feet, and you will find that the ground of Tianzifang is not the common bluestone slab in Jiangnan Ancient Town, but a rectangular brick or "human" brick with a blue and gray color, which complements the scale of the narrow alleys and paves a unique walking rhythm.

Art and humanities - creativity breathes in the alley
Art is the original intention and soul of Tianzifang, and it is scattered in all corners.

- Hidden studios and galleries: Despite the commercial atmosphere, deep in the alleys, you'll find studios of painters, independent design studios, pottery galleries and photography salons. Most of these spaces are renovated from old factories or houses, which are a fusion work in themselves.
- A dazzling array of creative markets: From original accessories, handmade leather goods, vintage clothing, to Shanghai-style silk products and sachets, each shop tries to tell a unique story. Shopping here is more like choosing a memory with the temperature of the creator.
- The aroma of coffee that never fades: Cafes are an important landscape in Tianzifang. Find a café with a small window on the second floor to sit down, order a cup of hand pour, and watch the bustling flow of people in the alley outside the window, which is the best way to experience the artistic conception of Tianzifang's "stealing half a day's leisure".

Photography tips:
> The best humanistic camera is located by the window of the café on the second floor, which can capture the flow of people and light and shadow in the alley;
> Feature details such as green vintage mailboxes, hanging signs, and partial brick wall textures make excellent subjects;
> It is recommended to use prime lenses to capture more vivid and textured images in tight spaces;
> Please note that photography is prohibited inside some stores, so please ask politely before taking photos.

Core Experience: An Immersive Shanghai-Style Travel Guide

Five things you must do to unlock authentic local fun.
1. Get lost once and become a "lane detective" for a day.
- The essence: Forget the map, just wander into any side road you like. The greatest fun is often hidden in the most inconspicuous corners.
- Discovery: It might be an exquisite mosaic wall, a nostalgic little shop that only sells old Shanghai face cream, or a cat sunbathing.
2. Send a postcard to the future.
- Experience: Many small shops offer postcard mailing services, and you can even send one to your "future self." Choosing a postcard depicting the Shikumen style and writing down your feelings at this moment is a very ritualistic way to commemorate the occasion.
3. Choose a creative souvenir with a story behind it.
- Treasure Hunt: Besides common items, keep an eye out for creative merchandise from the long-established Shanghai brand "White Rabbit," or exquisitely embroidered traditional sachets. The deeper you venture into the alleys, the more surprising the prices may be.
- Tip: Original designs are supported to create a unique memory of your journey.
4. Savor the fusion of Chinese and Western flavors in the alleyways
- Local Shanghai Snacks: Find authentic Shanghai flavors such as pan-fried buns and xiaolongbao at the entrance of alleyways.
- Creative Drinks: Try the adorable "syringe drink" or colorful hibiscus tea.
- For main meals: Since restaurant space in the alley is limited, we recommend going to the "Sun Moon Light Center" plaza across the street, where there are a wide variety of dining options with better value for money.
5. Waiting for the fading lights at sunset.
- Key point: Dusk is the magic hour in Tianzifang. As the daytime hustle and bustle fades, the shop lights come on one by one, casting a warm yellow glow on the brick walls, achieving the perfect balance between local charm and artistic flair.

Suggested tour routes
The Tianzifang area is suitable for a half-day in-depth tour. If you want to experience Shanghai's landscape more comprehensively, you can connect it with the surrounding historical blocks.

A half-day "deep maze" tour (suitable for first-time visitors):
Arrive at 2 PM (avoiding the midday peak) → Enter from the main entrance on Taikang Road, walk along the main alley to the end to establish a basic sense of direction → Begin exploring the branches aimlessly, paying close attention to the studios, design shops, and second-floor cafes on both sides → Around 4 PM, choose a cafe you like to rest and enjoy the view → At dusk, take a final stroll through the alleys after they are lit up to experience the night → Head to the Sun Moon Light Center for dinner.

A one-day "Shanghai-style Art and Culture" tour (highly recommended):
Morning: Start from Huaihai Middle Road (where you can visit the large Line Friends themed store), walk to Sinan Road, which is full of stories, and visit historical buildings such as Sinan Mansion and Zhou Enlai's Former Residence.
Lunch: Have lunch near Sinan Road or Ruijin Second Road.
Afternoon: Walk to Tianzifang and begin a half-day exploration of its alleyways (refer to the itinerary above).
In the evening: After dining in the Dapuqiao business district, you can easily take the subway to Xintiandi or the Bund to experience Shanghai's dazzling modern night view.

How to get there: Conveniently accessible by direct subway.
Tianzifang is located in the city center and has extremely convenient public transportation.
- Most recommended way: Take Metro Line 9 to "Dapuqiao Station", exit from Exit 1, and the entrance to Tianzifang is right across the street.
- Alternative subway: The "Matang Road Station" on subway line 13 is also accessible, about a 10-minute walk away.
- Driving tips: The surrounding area is an old town with narrow roads and very limited and expensive parking spaces. It is strongly advised against driving there.

Best time to visit
Tianzifang is suitable for all seasons, but the experience varies significantly at different times of the year.
- Weekdays (especially mornings and evenings): Best time to visit. The crowds are relatively moderate, allowing you to more leisurely appreciate both the tranquility and the bustle of the alleyways.
- Weekends and public holidays in the afternoon: Peak hours. The alleys become very crowded, greatly diminishing the visitor experience; it is recommended to avoid these times.
- Rainy days: have a unique charm, but be aware that the alleyways are slippery and some open-air stalls may not be open for business.

Accommodation options
- Next to the core area (preferred):
1. Hotels in the Dapuqiao business district: such as various chain hotels, just steps away from Tianzifang and Sun Moon Light Center, making it extremely convenient for eating, drinking and entertainment.
2. Unique hotel apartments: such as the Shanghai Guangfa Building Hotel Apartment, which offers a family-style accommodation experience and is within walking distance of scenic spots.
Suitable for: Tourists who want to maximize convenience and deeply experience the neighborhood life.
- Nearby distinctive neighborhoods (optional for experiencing):
1. Hotels near Xintiandi/Sinan Road: such as the Magnolia Hotel (Tianzifang Madang Road Metro Station Branch), etc., have a more historical and cultural atmosphere and are easily accessible from Tianzifang by subway or on foot.
Suitable for tourists who have higher requirements for accommodation quality and plan to visit multiple historical and cultural blocks in Shanghai.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
